May marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, prevention, and early detection. As an aesthetic clinic, we’re passionate not only about helping you look your best - but also about keeping your skin healthy and safe.
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, but the good news is that early detection saves lives. Knowing what’s normal for your skin—and what isn’t—can make all the difference.
Why Skin Checks Matter
Your skin is constantly changing, but not all changes are harmless. Regularly checking your moles, freckles, and lesions can help you spot anything unusual early on.
If something looks different, new, or evolving—it’s always worth getting it checked.
What’s Normal?
Most moles and skin marks are completely harmless. Typical features of a normal mole include:
Even colour (usually tan, brown, or flesh-toned)
Symmetrical shape
Smooth, well-defined borders
Stable size and appearance over time
It’s completely normal to have moles and pigmentation—what matters is noticing change.
What’s Not Normal?
Use the ABCDE rule as a guide when checking your skin:
A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
B – Border: Edges are irregular, blurred, or jagged
C – Colour: Multiple colours or uneven shading
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or sensation
Other warning signs include:
Bleeding or crusting
Itching or tenderness
A sore that doesn’t heal
A new mole appearing in adulthood
