The Pressures of Christmas

Every year, Christmas seems to creep up faster than the last. One minute it’s summer barbecues and ice creams, and the next we’re knee-deep in wish lists, school concerts, Secret Santas, and the endless hunt for that one toy every shop has somehow just sold out of.
For parents, the festive season can feel less like a joyful celebration and more like a marathon you forgot to train for.
We’re the memory-makers, the list-tickers, the decorators, the budget jugglers, the magic creators. And while we’re doing everything we can to make Christmas special for everyone else, we often forget about one very important person: ourselves.
The Christmas Load No One Talks About
It’s not just the physical tasks - shopping, wrapping, baking, clearing, organising. It’s the emotional weight too:
making sure the kids feel the magic
making sure the extended family is happy
making sure the traditions are kept alive
making sure everything is “perfect”
But somewhere between buying stocking fillers and basting turkeys, parents often lose the space to breathe, let alone enjoy the season themselves.
Self-Care Isn’t an Indulgence-It’s a Reset
It’s so easy to push ourselves to the bottom of the list. We tell ourselves: “I’ll rest after Christmas.” But by then we’re running on fumes.
Self-care doesn’t need to be extravagant. It simply needs to be intentional.
For some parents, that might look like a quiet hour with a book or a walk alone. For others, it might be booking that 4-month anti-wrinkle treatment they’ve been putting off.Or maybe it’s a round of golf whatever feels like a moment reclaimed just for you.
The important part is recognising that you are allowed to have time, space, and treats of your own. In fact, you need them.
When Parents Look After Themselves, Everyone Benefits
We all want to be the best version of ourselves for our families, especially at Christmas. But exhaustion doesn’t make magic.Rest, joy, and care do.
When you take time for yourself, you’re not being selfish-you’re refilling the energy, patience, and warmth that everyone else loves you for.
This Christmas, Add Yourself to the List
So while you’re buying gifts, planning menus, and creating magical memories, don’t forget the person holding it all together.
Give yourself a treat.Give yourself a break.Give yourself permission.
Because you aren’t just making Christmas special-you’re allowed to enjoy it too.
So please ensure you treat yourself this year - and if that's at Luminate Aesthetics having some anti-wrinkle or an hours long heaven facial then so be it!! You deserve it!!
