Why You Should Always Wear SPF on a Plane ✈️☀️

When most people think about sunscreen, they picture beach trips, summer hikes, or lazy pool days. But one of the most overlooked places where your skin needs protection is actually on an airplane.

The Hidden Risk: UV Exposure at 35,000 Feet

Airplanes fly at altitudes where the atmosphere is much thinner - meaning you’re closer to the sun’s harmful UV rays and less protected by the Earth’s natural shield. Studies have shown that pilots and flight attendants have a higher risk of developing melanoma compared to the general population. And while you’re not in the cockpit, you’re still sitting next to those big cabin windows.

UV rays can penetrate airplane windows, especially UVA rays (the ones responsible for premature aging and skin cancer). That means your skin is still exposed even if you’re inside the cabin.

The Aging Factor

Even if skin cancer isn’t top of mind, UVA rays are one of the biggest contributors to wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging skin. Frequent flyers often notice their skin looking dull or dehydrated - combine that with UV exposure, and the effects add up over time.

How to Protect Your Skin While Flying

  • Apply SPF before you board: Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Look for formulas that are lightweight, non-greasy, and easy to reapply.

  • Reapply on long flights: Just like being outdoors, SPF wears off over time - especially if you rub your face or rest it against the seat.

  • Don’t forget your hands: Your hands are often right by the window (or on your phone/laptop) and are one of the first places to show signs of aging.

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Airplane cabins are extremely dry. Pair SPF with a good moisturiser or hydrating mist to keep your skin barrier healthy.

  • Pick a window seat strategically: If you love sitting by the window, consider closing the shade when the sun is shining directly in.

Bonus Tip for Frequent Flyers

Consider using a tinted sunscreen or SPF with antioxidants for extra defense. These can help protect against not just UV, but also blue light from screens - another skin stressor you face on a long flight.
